Machinist engages TONO to create outpost on homestead

Furthering the recent wave of masculine-leaning spaces for hobbyists with unconventional interests, TONO is developing a workshop for a Lancaster County machinist on his three acre home site. Following through on the owner’s vision for a uniquely creative workshop and recreation building, the 1500 SF structure provides spaces for machining, automobile work, personal leisure and small gatherings. Viewed as a complimentary structure to the existing “Bauhaus” style white brick and glass home, the new outbuilding would serve as a year-round place to tinker, relax and play.

Taking architectural cues from the existing home while introducing a decidedly more progressive aesthetic, the building includes ample open interior space with a loft, sliding-garage doors, significant window areas and a floor structure capable of supporting heavy machinery and vehicles.

Clad in white cement plaster, the reinforced masonry workshop envelope is contrasted with the charcoal finish of fiber cement boards on a maple plywood loft cube. Carefully placed within the densely wooded landscape, the new man cave outpost features numerous environmentally conscientious building systems.
