Lancaster Airport // Adaptive Re-Use and Renovation // 2005
As part of a larger master planning effort to expand the viability and capabilities of Airways, Inc. at Lancaster Airport, TONO Architects proposed the adaptive re-use of the existing 18,000 square foot hangar and service center as a retail and hospitality operation. By relocating the service and maintenance aspects of the Fixed Base Operator into a newly constructed, adjacent state-of-the-art hangar structure, the balance of the existing building is reconfigured and significantly enhanced to provide a nostalgic focal point for the airport. With its Art Deco façade references, observation court, voluminous interior and imposing scale, the new aviation retail center will draw visitors from up and down the east coast.
