Expanding the existing campus at Messiah Village, TONO Architects developed a series of prototypical independent living cottages in various configurations aimed to provide low maintenance, high quality traditional living accommodations for new residents of the village. Challenges included developing easily accessible residences for seniors on a narrow and steeply sloped portion of the property. Working closely with the executive leadership of Messiah Village, the land planners and building contractor, TONO helped create an updated architectural language for the facilities including distinctive four-unit cottages engaged into the hillside. Known as the Washington and Jefferson Cottages, these homes gain access directly to grade on both the upper and lower elevations of the hillside offering ample daylight to all interior spaces.
