Berwyn, PA  //  New Construction  //  2004

Designed for an entrepreneurial couple living in Berwyn, Pa. on the main line west of Philadelphia, the new residence is a blend of ex-urban living fused with the latest construction technologies. Exploiting the dramatic wooded site to gain the most benefit from solar exposures, slope and prevailing winds, the home is rooted within its site, engaging the hillside with broad, natural stone terrace walls. Designed as an open and flowing series of living spaces, the gracious residence boasts a series of innovations including the implementation of natural daylighting techniques, ultra-efficient heating, cooling and artificial lighting systems, high-recycled content building products and passive solar energy collection techniques. What is more, the structural bearing system employs insulated, poured-in-place concrete walls and floor systems with integral radiant heat. Even with its high-tech building components however, the house recalls old-world craftsmanship through the use of reclaimed timbers and fine interior woodwork.
