United Bank Card moves in

Having recently completed their relocation to Allentown, Pennsylvania, United Bank Card has rebranded under the new name Harbortouch. With a new facility refitted by TONO Architects, the national point-of-sale/credit card processing corporation has grown to several hundred employees in their new 27,000 square foot facility. Designed by Dan Garner and Angelique Miller, the new space features progressively modern touches including an open floor plan, new furnishings, and interior appointments throughout. With high efficiency lighting, recycled content flooring, furnishings and tile, the new headquarters for Harbortouch provides its staff with an immeasurably improved work environment.

Presently, TONO Architects and its construction management companion entity PROTO are completing the move-in process for Harbortouch by designing, assembling and installing a custom artwork and décor package. Please check back for more details as this exciting project nears completion.

Pelletron reinvigorated

Begun as an interior reimagining for a global plastics conveying company, the improvements to the worldwide headquarters of Pelletron Corporation became the first fully delivered design-build project for both TONO Architects and its construction services entity, PROTO. The new interior features a series of artful interventions including MDF panel clad walls, large-format vinyl wall graphics and PVC pellet filled polycarbonate cellular display panels. Thoughtfully executed by interior designer Angelique Miller, the construction work was managed by Fran Bridge, long-time project manager for TONO Architects, now directing the PROTO Construction Management effort.

Crossway tops out

In recent weeks, CH&E Construction completed the steel erection for Crossway Church in Millersville, Pennsylvania. On January 5th, members of the design team from TONO Architects, along with several Pastors from the church, witnessed the setting of the 14 ton, 110 foot long, central girder truss spanning the 10,000 square foot multi-purpose room. With the steel frame completed and the main floor level concrete slab in place, Lancaster County Timber Frames will soon begin placing the glue-laminated wood portions of the main roof assembly. With spans over 100′, the custom-designed hybrid steel and timber truss elements are unlike any in the region.

Armstrong Manor converted

Retained just prior to the holidays by Rodgers & Associates of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, TONO recently began planning the conversion of the former Armstrong Manor in Manheim Township into the new offices for a growing area wealth management and retirement planning firm. This historic seven acre property, once used for executive training and retreats by Armstrong World Industries, was recently acquired by the financial agency for private use. Intended to maintain it’s original elegance and grand interiors, the new owners enlisted TONO Architects to reconfigure and update various areas throughout its interior. Led by Keith Falco and Dan Garner, the design team is working closely with High Construction on the delicate process of converting and upgrading this landmark facility.

TONO takes Gettyburg

Foreseeing an opportunity to create affordable, stylish modern and convenient new housing for students of Gettysburg College, a local Adams County development group commissioned TONO Architects in late 2011 to design a new model for sustainable housing in downtown Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. While remaining sympathetic to the scale, proportion and material language of its surrounding context, the new 51,000 square foot, four-story facility promotes a decidedly contemporary architectural approach.

Seeking to employ various high performance green building methods, Douglas Phillips and Hunter Johnson collaborate at TONO to bring greater long-term investment return to the development and ownership team. Presently in the early design stages with Robert Sharrah Associates, land planners and civil engineers, the facility is slated for occupancy by fall term of 2013. Fire damaged showroom gets facelift

Following a devastating overnight fire last June, Brubaker, Inc. on Roherstown Road in East Hempfield Township enlisted the design services of TONO Architects to provide a much-needed facelift to their showroom and operations base. Keeping with the owners’ desire to maintain a spacious interior and provide ample storefront, the design team at TONO, led by Design Director Douglas Phillips, created an elegantly simple facade of stone, stucco and glass. Reminiscent of the original building 1950′s art deco leanings, the new entry features a panoramic storefront with a central tower element giving the establishment both prominence and an updated identity. Slated for construction in the Spring of 2012, the project will be built by High Construction of Lancaster.

TONO takes flight… again

Charged with the mission to develop a one-of-a-kind operation center and retreat for the international-renowned civilian aerobatics unit, Black Diamond Jet Team, TONO was recently retained again by the President of United Bank Card to create an interior environment unique to his performance aviation team’s identity. Intending to build a state-of-the-art command center with video walls, flight planning areas and pilot’s offices, the facility also will contain recreational areas including a fully functional bar, retreat area and gaming space. TONO’s Principal Architect and owner Hunter Johnson recently accompanied the Team to its new base in Lakeland, Florida where he gained unique perspective of the unit’s talents and skill by spending time in the passenger seat of one of their L39 Albatross vintage fighter jets and attending their air show in Stuart, Florida.

Laurel Run Master Plan Update

Begun in early 2011, the master planning effort for The Village of Laurel Run in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania has transitioned into schematic design for its first phase of construction. With an ultimate build-out of 500,000 square feet and containing 240 independent living apartment units and a core amenities facility, the initial phase includes 40 one and two bedroom apartments, interior private resident parking and a lifestyle center with dining and recreation amenities. Intending to capture views of its beautifully wooded mountainside setting and create an ambiance of lodge living and retreat, early architectural studies portray expanses of glass, balconies, outdoor gathering areas and timber-framed gables.

Flex-Cell Precision

Retained in the summer of 2011 by a growing metal sciences fabrication company, TONO Architects recently completed the design concept and documentation for the 10,000 square foot interior fit-out of Flex-Cell Precision in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Following the owner’s wish to construct a hospitable interior environment for his fabricators and engineers, the concept inverts the building’s landscape by placing a series of “facades” within the shop area to create a courtyard effect. Moreover, each of the surrounding function areas gains its own identity through a series of graphical cues and material contrasts all incorporating the company’s corporate brand as a hi-tech manufacturing entity.

Linetty goes vertical…

The first project fully developed by Proto Construction Management, the Design/Build delivery arm of TONO Architects, is taking shape in East Lampeter Township. Begun in September under wet site conditions and unrelenting rains, the 1,600 square foot machine shop and retreat space for Joe Linetty is soon to be enclosed. With its reinforced concrete block envelope and steel/wood frame roof structure, the building’s orientation and fenestration take advantage of the site’s expansive views and lush landscape.
